An iPhone in my life...

iphone_home.gifYes... there is something new in my life... an iPhone...
Toni, my dear friend, gave me one that he bought for me in the US. I did not want it, but he insisted so badly that I could not refuse it... Thanks Toni... you know you should not have done that...

It took me 4 minutes to unlock it with ziphoneziphone.gif
Ziphone is a little application that you download to your PC, you run it and your iPhone is unlocked and fully open. There is no secret. You run the program, you click on do it all and after 4 minutes I had the phone free, running 1.1.3.

I adds the App installer and a ziphone shorcut that you can delete.

Then if you want 1.1.4 you connect it to itunes, and you upgrade it. Then the iPhone will be lock again. You run again the ziphone GUI but this time you click on don't unlock, as it is already unlocked... and surprise! you have 1.1.4!

My fundamental question was weather to continue with the iPhone or go back to my HTC p3300.... as the iPhone does not support Push (IMAP IDLE) has no GPS (and tom tom), no FM radio, no splashid software (to manage my confidential data), no onenote and office, no video recording, contacts can not be sorted by categories or even searched, has no copy paste .... but the potential I see in this machine is huge... a full MAC OS, where I connect via ssh, run a terminal or even apache... I have the feeling that this phone will mark the beginning of a new era.

If you want to know more about the apps, installing the cyndia installer, reparing the default installer and adding more sources, and a list of the applications I have (ssh2, converter...) click on read more...

Applications.

The default Installer has one of the sources wrong, so first thing is to go to:

http://www.appleiphoneschool.com/sources

And modify the source for conceited software. The url for it is: http://www.macminicolo.net/conceited/iphone/cache.plist

You can add some more:

I added ModMyApple.it : http://www.serverasp.net/chiafa/MMA/repo.xml because it has a very nice application called iBirthday that will tell you when the birthdays of your addressbook are.

From iClarified I installed iLog (it is a paid one, but very very cool. Better than wetool)

Under Network: VNSea (You can see your Mac from you iphone)
Finally if you want to have Fake BSD subsystem, which is necessary to run SSH, you have to install another installer that it is called Cyndia Packager (better installer, with search and better selection.). It is similar to the Installer you have but with less variety. Once you have this installed then you can install:
Fake BSD Subsystem and SSH (if you use putty or filezilla, remember to change the password for root, which by default is "apline").
You can intall from twenty08 MobileChat.

For skype you have: http://s4iphone.com/index_iphone.jsp (not very good though...)

And other nice utilities such as:

  • BossPrefs (or NetServices)
  • weTool (like iLog but free, and not that good)
  • Converter (one of my favourites!!!)
  • MACalc (Scientific calculator)
  • MobileTerminal (but be careful as the keyboard is limited... if you ping... you cannot stop!...)
  • VNotes (very good to record notes)
Then one annoying thing I found is that because I travel a lot, I have all my number as +41 (country code) etc... so if I am abroad is fine, but at home the iPhone sees a 078... so it does not find it in the contacts... so very anoying.
The solution is to have ssh and use filezila to connect, download this files:
http://users.skynet.be/ra045246/
The dynamic phone library
and then:
- Create a directory named "Support" in the /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/ directory on your iPhone.
- Copy the contents of the "AppSupport/x.x.x" (where "x.x.x" is your iPhone's firmware version) directory in the zip file to the /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/ directory on your iPhone.
- Copy the contents of the "AppSupport - Support" directory in the zip file to the /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/Support/ directory on your iPhone.
- Reboot iPhone.

Voicemail

Your annoyed because the Voicemail button does not work on your iPhone?

Reconfigure the button to dial your own voicemail:

- Get to your iPhone’s number keyboard

- Type *5005*86*xxx# (where xxx is your voicemail number). In Switzerland, the standard number is +4186YYYYYYYYYY (where YYYYYYYYYY is your phone number: ex: 079 123 45 67). Example for a Swiss number: type *5005*86*+41860791234567#

- Press the “Call” button, wait a few seconds… and it’s done! Now, when you tap the Voicemail button, it will dial your own voicemail.

Remark: you can also configure it with your national number (0791234567) instead of the international one (+41791234567), but it won’t work when you are roaming…

I hope this helps. I will continue playing with it for a while, hoping that they will improve in future releases.
